Avicii

Avicii has been churning out remixes and original songs like no other this summer. The guy is a musical cyborg. He is a special bread who not only puts the time in, but has the creativity to turn every project into a memorable one. Oh yeah, and then he collaborated with some guy named John Dahlback (I haven't heard of him either) to produce one of the summers biggest tunes.

Island Livin

Pendulum is about to tear up dancefloors all over the world with his soon to be released 'The Island' Part 1 (Dawn) and Part 2 (Dusk). Dusk was Pete Tong's essential tune recently and for good reason. I don't want to spoil this song with my crappie writing, so I'll let it do the talking for me.

Hide and Seek Avicii?

While I know that we have oggled over Avicii's tribal drumlines and cataclismic synths before, but these two tracks epitomize his sound. First up is the Axwell remix of "Bromance", as expected the Swedish producers has added lovely vocals and a piano roll. Personally, I find the track a bit long and redundant, it seems as if after the first drop, it is just repeated Next we have Avicii's remix of "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap, which I find to be one of the best around- they're have been at least two dozen or so remixes of this song.

Your Name

Pharrell has officially been incorporated into SHM's 'One', now known as 'One (Your Name)'. Definitely more top 40 friendly and as far as I'm concerned not as good of a song. I'm not posting this because it's one of my favourite songs but that some of you may like it more than the original. Personally I don't. It feels too short and segmented, and the vocals feel forced. I know I said I would like a vocal mix when I first posted the song but maybe I was wrong and the song is too powerful already. Don't take my word for it though:

Reach Out

I figure this would be an appropriate title, and track for a post on Mother's day. Dirty Harris introduced himself in 2010 by winning the Funkagenda - Afterclub remix competition for Toolroom records. His infectious tribal, tech mix will feature alongside Funkgenda & Riva Starr. Enjoy, although given the day I would suggest using headphones.

Mainstream This.

Deadmau5 has been busy at work lately producing a huge group of new tunes. This guy lives and breathes house music. A lot of people have lately been proposing that Deadmau5 is now too mainstream and too well known. My retort: Who cares? Being popular doesn't devalue your work unless you let it. Maybe some people just need to feel they are always on the cutting edge and once the secret is out, so are they. I understand where this thinking comes from as it's always nice to share a niche (musical, cultural or whatever) with a group of friends but what I'm not agree with is that an artist is too 'played out' because every Joe bro knows them and has googled how to make a Deadmau5 mask. The problem I have with bands/producers going mainstream is the assimilation of their sound to a radio friendly, cheap-pop style of music that will appeal to the masses simply to appeal to the masses. In no way does Deadmau5 fit this criteria; he does things his own way, and hopefully always will. He constantly pushes the barriers of his genre and has now released a couple new tunes to further support his case, which brings us to the reason for this post (sorry about all that, feeling a tad preachy this morning).

First up, his remix of Pendulum's 'Watercolor'. I really like the vocals on this track so it gets off on the right foot with me immediately. Keep in mind this song, like the majority of his new tunes, is made for an arena or a festival. It may not sound too terrific playing out of your 5 year old 2.1 logitech speakers you're 'borrowing' from your roommate. If you've ever seen him live just visually implant this song somewhere in the set and you'll see what I mean. If not...it's called Youtube. Deadmau5 masterfully uses a catchy chorus to elevate this song to another level. It has me salivating for the next time I see the man live, and hopefully it will have you too.

Next, his original production 'Some Chords'. This song definitely has the Deadmau5y sound to it. At nearly 8 minutes long you'll have plenty of time to enjoy it through its progressive journey, starting out slow and moving its way to one of his trademark energy infused chorus'. Somehow he has managed to keep his original sound and kept our ears excited with new melodies and synths that will have you scratching your head and hitting the rewind button (in a good way).

Hey Hey

Dennis Ferrer entered the dance music scene by combining with Jerome Sydenham to create "Sandcastles" in 2003. Since then he has produced and song-written for a myriad of genres ranging from acid, techno, gospel and soul. His his latest release, "Hey Hey" is a soul-stirring, modern house tune that reflects Mr. Ferrer's wide range of musical tastes. We have included the Riva Starr, who is a favourite of ours, remix, however the vocal mix is far superior.

Bingo

While this song was released a few weeks ago, and given my scan of the blogosphere, did not get the respect or praise it deserves. Dalhback takes this track in a different direction than he is known for; it's a bit less progressive and underground, and a bit more house and mainstream. Nonetheless it's a gem.

John Dahlback ft. Elodie- Bingo (Extended Mix)

SHM

I'm really not going to go to in depth on this song. You have all by now heard of the Swedish House Mafia's new single 'One'. Everyone believes it's the best thing since sliced bread and it just might be. There have been rumblings of a vocal mix which I would personally love to see, but until then I guess we'll just have to settle for the biggest song released this year. Woe is me.

Coming soon to a set of speakers near you:

Morning Sunshine

As I awoke in my own bed for the first time in a few months, I thought to myself, "how can I make this morning better? Fresh new tunes of course!" Genius, ne pas? And so I quickly sifted through my iTunes recently added and mashed some of my favourite tunes together starting out relatively calm and slowly building.

The first song that really stuck out for me was Nic Fanciulli's remix of 'Two Dots'. Is there a better way to start a morning than to great vocals and a melodic up-beat tune? I think not. I suggest saving this one for the next lazy morning you have, and just kick back with a big bowl of Harvest Crunch and enjoy.

The Longer the Better

While debating if I should mission it two hours to see Funkagenda play tonight I went off on a tangent of some of my favourite progressive tracks. All of these possess lovely long, drawn out build ups as they approach the crescendo. Most people are too impatient for these builds-they are foolish. As with most things that are leading to some big explosion or critical moment, the longer the the better, or at least that's what she said...

First up we have Sebastian Leger, a favourite of ours, this time with an edgy sounding tune using vocal samples from Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People".
Sebastian Leger- The People(Original Mix)

While David Guetta is notorious for his trendy electro collaborations with such artists as Akon, Kid Cudi and Will.I.am, his independent progressive collaborations are why I respect the Frenchman. "Grrrrr" and his remix of Calvin Harris' Flashback are the epitome of his talent, and versatility.
David Guetta- Grrrr (Original Mix)
Calvin Harris- Flashback (David Guetta 'One Love' Remix)

This post wouldn't be complete without some Funkagenda tracks- he was the impetus for this post after-all. I implore you to listen to these tracks on the best and loudest sound system you can get your hands on to truly appreciate the nuances and effort he puts into his music.

Human

I come today bearing gifts of vocals and synth basses. Mariana and The Diamonds' "I am Not a Robot" is a powerful song that Doorly has managed to harness and turn into a beautiful remix with a very cool relaxed bassline. The vocals carry the song and will be swimming around your head for forthcoming days without a doubt. This is one remix where less is definitely more. Doorly hasn't ripped out the heart of the song, he has put it on display and built an amazing track around it. Turn off your TV, YouTube clip, any outside pollutants and turn this up.

How Do You Spell Huge?

A.V.I.C.I.I.
This guy just can't help but make the biggest progressive tunes known to man. His latest song 'Bromance' (insert Brody Jenner joke here), under his alter ego Tim Berg, is ripping up the electronic world. If you haven't been following Avicii up to this point this song will leave you no doubt he is headed for bigger and better things. The 'Arena Mix' was no lie as adding just the right amount of reverb has written 'festival approved' all over it. 'Bromance' will surely be destroying a dancefloor near you in the not so distant future so, you're welcome.

Turn. It. Up.

Gotta Love Gimmicks

I was up late watching awful infomercials last night and I started to think about gimmicks. My thoughts continued throughout the day as I thought about the ice-cream maker I bought that could barley make a scoop of ice cream- let alone the 2L's that was advertised, the 3-way super soaker that never amounted enough pressure to ever shoot 3 continuous streams and finally the hot dog toaster oven that was used maybe twice before the novelty wore off. Thinking about music in general, it is very gimmicky, and it takes a lot of talent, especially in the techno and house genres, to endure the test of time. Having said that and keeping with the theme, these two songs are both very gimmicky. So enjoy them while there hot.

Monday MEGA Post

Exams have been here so I thought I would compile all of my favourite songs I've dug up over the past week and deliver them to you in one super sized post to save everyone time.

First, Michael Woods and Chris Lake's 'Dominos'. This is one of those songs you can just get lost in and by the time the hook comes you've started pumping your fist and moving your body to the beat. Very progressive, very 'Woodsy' (a good thing), dark with it's simple drum beat and deep bassline, and overall a large sound that will swallow you up.

Next, Laidback Luke has remixed Moby's new tune 'Wait for Me'. You've probably heard about this song already, as it has been circulating the blogosphere like a rampant swine flu (about half a year late for that reference to be funny). I am and have always been a sucker for a great piano roll (c. Axwell), and Laidback Luke has certainly refined his art. Although I find the second hook to be a little anti-climactic, because of a pseudo-hook a few seconds before, the song is still a gem. That's just my opinion, I've always been a little timid of songs that are more minimal/progressive. Even so, this song deserves a listen no matter what genre you find yourself drawn to. Well done Luke.

Michael Woods makes another appearance with his latest single 'Dropzone 2010'. Once again progressive with a big room feel that Woods seems to be able to capture on all his songs and remixes. Subtle but huge seems to be the theme of the day, so I figured 'why not another?'

Now to destroy any pattern I had going before this last song jumps to the other end of the spectrum directly into a house/dub step genre. Rusko's 'Woo Boost' is certainly the dub step song of the year with its HUGE wobbly/synth bass, but Subskrpt has given it a more club friendly, house approved feel. He has added a nice drum beat along with a quicker tempo and his own take on the song. Although it remains evident the song's roots lay in dub step, the tempo tells another story and will fit nicely into a set without having to change pace too much.

Hope you enjoy these tunes, I know they are at the top of my study playlist.

Weapon of Mass Destruction

So I was surfing around all my favourite blogs and beatport charts the other day and found a bomb. Granted this is no super exclusive-secret song (Beatport #1) that I dug out of the depths of the underground, it is just too huge not to be posted. It just makes you..... move. To top it off it's a home grown good ol' Canadian boy smashing the remix.
The song? Fatboy Slim's 'Weapon of Choice'. Yes, you've all heard the song and seen the music video where Christopher Walken busts a move. I didn't know if this anthem could be improved on after hearing years of remixes that did little or anything to improve on Slim's work. Lazy Rich (hailing from Vancouver) has done just what I had thought impossible: made this song madder than the original. I mean the bassline is insanity and will certainly give any dance floor an energy boost. Lately I've been moving away from electro and I've missed some of those crazy hooks that come along with it. Thank you Lazy Rich for reminding me why I loved that genre for so long.
By now you probably think that Rich wrote this review himself, but I assure you as Byron's closest confidant that he would never allow anyone to compromise the integrity of this blog. The song is really just that good.

Try and tell me otherwise:

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Maison

It doesn't really surprise me when new artists burst onto the scene hailing form France. It is by now expected to churn out a new crop of producers and artists that change the way we view French house.. Next-in-line Surkin, hails from Paris and is breaking the mold yet again. A recent participant of WMC, his tunes are gaining respect all over the dance music world. With trips spanning from Buenos Aires to the Australian coast and his home in Europe it won't be long before this kid starts earning some major club play.

His newest song 'Fan Out' at the risk of sounding old fashioned is grooving. The big bassline doesn't overpower the song's undeniably retro vibe but gives it a club friendliness. I'll say it again like I've said it before, there's something in the water in that country.

Get Happy

Another remix of the Two Door Cinema Club's 'Something Good Can Work' leaves a smile on my face yet again. This time The Twelves have put their own spin on the song. We have written about the Brazilian based duo before and their 'Beaches and Friends' remix. Once again they have impressed me with their ability to draw out the upbeat, happy and yet DJ friendly side of a song. Frowning while listening to this song may qualify you as the spawn of Satan. If they keep producing Disco this well, I may be required to devote a blog purely to their productions. I think the name might be something like 'Get Happy'. Cheesy? Yes. Appropiate? Undeniably. For now however, I think occasionally gracing Byron with their presence will suffice.

So get happy.

Focus

Sub Focus has come to the forefront of the UK Drum and Bass scene with huge tunes such as 'Could This Be Real' and 'Let the Story Begin' off his self -titled album. Nick Douwma has certainly been breaking down barriers and contributed to bringing D&B to the mainstream. He has branched off from just producing D&B and is now dabbling in a range of different genres (c. Could This Be Real). The mainstream music industry has become much more accepting of re-defining work that blurs genrees and allows artists to express their own personal style without being shunned. This has certainly affected Nick's production style and he is pushing the limits whatever genre he finds himself in. Another hit of his album 'Splash ft. Coco' will be Zane Lowe's record of the week tonight for good reason. The original is a powerful yet melodic tune that is simply put, a pleasure to listen to. I will post the vocal mix once it is released.

Get in the Zone

Does anyone remember watching The Zone, with Phil and that creepy purple puppet, on YTV? When I was searching for a picture for this post I stumbled upon this gem and couldn't help but post it. I never noticed how creepy Phil was with his excessive, gaudy jewellery and ponytail. Not to mention the whole concept of the some obnoxious purple puppet. It's scary to think that the Youth Television Network decided these characters would create a learning experience for it's young viewers. It's ever scarier to think that I was an avid viewer...but I digress.

DJ/producer's Bart Bmore and Carlo Lio couldn't keep their nimble fingers off MC Flipside's latest track "In the Zone". Each have added their own style to provide refreshing electro and tech-house remixes. I will guarantee that both of these tracks will be played at a pool party somewhere in Miami this week.

Be A Starr

Riva Starr's quirky style always keeps me guessing what he will unveil next. 'I Was Drunk' is the perfect example as its German inspired melody and its hilarious chorus dominated beatport for the last part 2009. His newest tune is a little more predictable but nonetheless grooving. 'Afterclub' by Funkagenda has been tearing up the blogs as of late and this remix has only fueled the fire. Riva Starr has given the song a little burst of life and implemented his trademark upbeat, almost comedic rhythm into it. He has a number of shows at WMC and is always one to watch out for.

Not So Laidback

After recently seeing Laidback Luke in Toronto, my respect for the already world renowned DJ has skyrocketed. Some DJ's fail to live up to the hype, but Laidback did nothing to disappoint me and although his set was short, made the most of his time by dropping some huge tunes.

His newest remix of 'Dirty Talk' has me saying nothing but good things about the Dutch DJ/Producer. Expect this guy to enhance his value even further at WMC with numerous sets and hopefully a few more monster remixes like this.

Stare

Fenech-Soler have been on my radar for a while now and are about to release their much anticipated single 'Stop and Stare' on MODA. The band consists of brothers Ben and Ross Duffy, Dan Francis and Andrew Lindsey. They hail from Oundle a small town in the East of England but have relocated to London in the past year. Their music is heavily influenced by 80's style artists including David Bowie and the like. This tune has had everyone at BBC1 (and myself) going mental so hopefully it drives you equally insane.

Bonus: Here's Alex Metric's remix of 'Lies'. Oldie but a goodie.

Cool

I think that I could have guessed who this remix was simply by listening to the hook. Bangduck anyone? Good thing I love that song otherwise I would be perturbed. It is still a cool techy tune that will fit right in at the Size pool party at WMC along tech monsters Steve Angelo and Christian Smith to name a few. I will try to keep the descriptions short to save you readers some time as the blogosphere goes alight with the mass of floor killers released this week.

Just Me, Only Me

More big tunes for WMC week.

RESET! is a five group members from Milano. They have remixed some huge tunes in the past three years. Their latest remix of the Audio Bully's "Only Man" is just the type of song I love. An upbeat yet grungy tune that has catchy lyrics that can get stuck in your head all day.

I need not go on about the next artist to remix this song. Jakwob has been a favourite of mine for a while and continues to supply club/casual listening friendly songs. Here's his take on the Audio Bully's track:

W.M.C.

It's finally here people, and it truly is time to celebrate. I can only hope that there aren't too many groundbreaking songs released this weekend as I fear for the bloody mess my keyboard will be left in. New SHM, Vangeli and AN21, Deadmau5 and just about anyone else in dance music worth listening to.

In honour of the event and the rapid success of AN21, he has treated us all to a free copy of two of his latest tunes.

Prepare for the conference people, it is time.

Eric Pryda D?

As if it wasn't hard enough to keep track of all the DJ's in this break neck paced industry but Eric Prydz insists on keeping us on your toes. He keeps his identity fresh in our minds and it seems like he adopts a new name every time he dabbles in another genre (which is quite often). His latest monicker 'Cirez D' under which he has produced an outstanding single out on the Mouseville label. This label has already unleashed a couple blog destroyers as can be seen in his two smash singles"Glow" and "On Off". He has now released "Bauerpost" as the next single to come of the label and I feel it's time to give credit where it is due. I for one have been a fan for some time and will continue to be and endure the nicknames as long as he keeps making tracks like these.

Strangers

I apologize for the past week, but come bearing gifts of dub, progressive house and of course disco.

I'll begin with an oldie, but one me and Byron have been really digging lately. Hervé is a remix freak and under whatever name he decides to produce these tunes they all have one thing in common: they make you move. This remix is one of my all time favourites. The second drop will get your heart pounding and party moving like no other.

Next up is Avicii's Set Me Free remix. No buildup quite entices me like a play-along piano roll (c. Axwell's 'Sweet Disposition). Avicii has produced a multitude of progressive and tech house hits that have been noteworthy so far in 2010. If this song suits your style I highly suggest you go to check out his myspace for other floor killing tunes. As well, keep an eye out for Avicii to receive a lot of attention at this year's WMC.

Now to one of our mutual favourites on the blog, Christian Smith. We have been supporting this guy for a while now, and for good reason. He simply crushes dance floors with his over sized tunes that just keep coming. I don't believe I need to say much about this track other than that you should listen to it. Period.

Finally my disco tunes. A few monsters for you this week, first an amazing remix by Siriusmo. This song isn't brand new, but who cares, I have a feeling that I'll be listening to this song for a while. Along with this song I'll include their remix of the smash hit BreakBot single 'Baby I'm Yours'. This song has been hyped like crazy and I figure it's time for me to jump on the bandwagon for the sake of the readers. If you like these two tunes be sure to check out Siriusmo's remix of Chromeo's Night by Night. Hands down one of my favourite tracks.

Enjoy your long overdue tunes.

Saturday Sunshine

Finally some bearable weather has come upon us in southern Ontario, and to celebrate I have some tracks to play as your cruising around, in your freshly dusted sunglasses, enjoying the sunshine.

Originally situated in Greece but now residing in Belgium/Ibizia according to their Myspace page, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike's "Feel It" remix of Dada Life's "Love Vibrations" is thunderous -perfectly timed vocals, suspenseful build-ups topped off with an spectacular drop.

In their latest production, the duo has teamed up with Andy Taylor in this progressive thumper. With a latin-inspired, trumpet introduction, thriving keyboard rifts and a rich bass-line this record is relentless and sounds very Swedish House Mafia-esque.

Winter Music Conference 2010

As we edge closer to hands-down the biggest event of the year in house, electro, etc. music, I felt it would be appropriate to provide our readership with some interesting articles forecasting the events and building much deserved hype. First up we have an article chronicling the amazing success that Steve Angello has experienced from WMC 2009 onward. Alongside fellow Swedish House Mafia members Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and psudo-member Laidback Luke and vocals by Deborah Cox, Angello released arguably one of the greatest songs of the year, and certainty the song of the conference in "Leave the World Behind." The article, titled "WMC Weapons: Steve Angello" also provides 10 tracks to look out for, most notable the release of a collaboration between Angello and Pharell Williams, which has yet to be named. Will this be the "Leave the World Behind" of 2010?

Another interesting article, featured our boy Afrojack, who has made leaps and bounds in 2009 and the early part of 2010. As mentioned below, we predict and Beatport agrees, he will be someone to watch in the remainder of 2010 and especially at the Conference. Will Afrojack Hijack WMC 2010?

Black Light

Groove Armada released their new album Black Light today and I have had the pleasure of listening to it for the past hour. I posted earlier last week on their single "Paper Romance" and this album certainly does not stop there. Dark undertones all the way through, but sing-along chorus' and foot tapping melodies keep the CD from becoming overly depressing. I have two select tracks that I think represent the diversity of the album, along with Paper Romance. Take a listen and seriously consider purchasing this album.

Lively Rock/Electronica feel to this song:

Great dark Disco vibe in this tune:

Double Your Dub

Two posts in a row, for good reason. This new remix by Style of Eye is absolutely enormous. The bassline is relaxed, as the majority of dubstep is, yet it keeps your attention and a positive vibe all the way through the song. That is my X-factor when it comes to dubtep. I need a song that I can party to, and this tune will have me up all hours of the night. Of course those nasty drops don't hurt it's value either. Style of Eye is headed for a breakout year in 2010, and if he keeps pumping out remixes like this he could really make a name for himself. Keep your eyes peeled for more posts involving this artist coming soon.

DJ's beware, use of this tune has been known to cause mass rioting:

Here's his original remix to boot:

Truly Golden

I'm sorry that I couldn't keep my hockey/music life separated, I just couldn't help myself. Congrats boys, you did it. Now on to the tunes.

Is your party dying? Are party-goers lulled to sleep with some sub-par tech house and minimal songs? How can I turn this around? Not to worry friends! Jakwob has been producing some serious remixes for the past year, provides your party jaws of life to salvage them. Wobbling basslines just seem to get the blood pumping, and that's exactly what these two tracks do.

I know what you're thinking, "Not another Starry-Eyed Remix!" Listen and you'll see why this one stands out from the others.

One more tune for ya, not as woobly or as dub-steppy, but party music nonetheless. Riton has been just as busy as Jakwob pushing out remixes left and right. This is a live version recorded from Amsterdam but do not be fooled as the quality is superb, and I actually enjoy the crowd in the background. Not to fret though, I will post an HQ version when it is released.

If this doesn't resuscitate your party, it had no pulse to begin with.

Nice to Meet You...

Keljet are new players to the electro world, but I think we should all give them a warm welcome. This duo from the Netherlands killed this track, a remix of The xx's Crystalized. With a great build up from the high-hat that leads to the pulsating bass-lines throughout the track, this strong first impression will be sure to help Keljet on their way up the ladder.

Friday Flavour

I think it's safe to say I am now riding within the groovy, minimally styled and uplifting confines of the tech-house cruiser. As I posted a week ago, the genre has crept into my soul and is now running through my veins. On this lovely friday afternoon as we gear up for the weekend I have three big tracks for our much appreciated followers.

First up we have an older song, released in 2007, that I stumbled upon while viewing Sebastien Leger's beatport discography. With uplifting synths and violin chords, a pulsing baseline and great depth this remix of Ida Engberg get's me grooving on the coldest and soberest of nights.

Next we have a producer I was recently introduced to, Pablo Cahn-Speyer. Raised in Colombia he was introduced to Jeff Mills-Live at Liquid Lounge- Tokyo, Japan at the age of 15 and instantly became obsessed with the scene. Now based in London, and having recently released his E.P Descarga on recording label Cadenza in 2009, he is someone to look out for in the future. What makes Pablo's production so distinct is the groove and flow, which is somehow resemblant to his Latin Roots.

Last we have a collaboration between two of the biggest producers in the game, Mark Knight and Dirty South. This track was composed during a 48 hour layover in Melbourne. "Everything about this record is HUGE - from the low pulsing side chained bass-line to the uplifting chords and euphoric melodies, topped off with a trademark massive drop and vocal hook that wont leave your brain." Enjoy.

Twice as Nice

Two posts in one day? I know, I'm astounded as well. It is for good reason as I've finally hunted down Michael Woods' Remix of "Feels Like a Prayer". This tune is enormous as are most of the things that Michael Woods is remixing these days. I'm on board, and I suggest you purchase a life preserver and join me. You'll know what I mean when you hear how massive this tune is. So before I use up every synonym known to man for the word big, I'll let your ears feast.

Turkey and Mashed Potatoes:

Pumpkin Pie:

Jacked

First, I apologize for my atrocious titles, I will try to get better.
Second, huge new tune released yesterday on Size Records by the crowd favoutrite Afrojack. He has certainly surpassed his up-and-comer title and is well on his way to super-stardom. The Dutch producer has been tearing up the charts the past year and will be doing so again very shortly with this little number. "Pacha on Acid" is sure to get any crowd rowdy as I witnessed first hand when Steve Angello dropped it at Mansion. If you weren't sure of this song before, you can rest easy now knowing that it has the Angello seal of approval (and mine of course).

Without any further ado:

Going Ape

The much anticipated new album from the Gorillaz "Plastic Beach" has already achieved some attention from a select few rising stars. The first to sink his teeth into the new single "Stylo" is Alex Metric. He has been impressing me for a while now both with his choice of music on his In New DJ's We Trust BBC Radio 1 program and the range of music he has created, produced, and remixed. He has always dabbled into the Disco but Metric has jumped in head first with this tune. If you like Disco this one is a can't miss.

Louis La Roche is definitely a DJ to keep an eye on in 2010. This guy pumps out songs that sound like a mix of Daft Punk with Disco, a recipe for success if I've ever heard one. You'll probably be hearing about him in a more in depth post later this week. For now you'll just have to wet your appetites by listening to his take on "Stylo".

The Monday Mix

Although released a couple weeks ago, the new AN21 and Friends podcast has generated a lot of hype, and rightfully so. With it's balance of progressive, tribal sounding house, rounded out with some of AN21 and Max Vangeli's recent productions the mix is nothing short of spectacular. The podcast also features a mini-mix by AN21's older brother Steve Angello, who amazes with a great sampling of tech house, the opening song,"Fidelidade", was actually posted yesterday. While looking for a picture for the post I typed in "AN21" and got this picture.

1. Moby- Go! (Prok 'n Fitch Bootleg)
3. Kenny D & Jaimy- Work It (Jaimy Remix)
4. Sultan & Ned Shepard- The Take (Recut)
5. Mischa Daniels- De Nuit (All That Matters)
6. Laidback Luke & Gregor Salto- Step By Step (Bigroom)

Sunday Selection: Techno House

While this genre of music has typically been related to illicit drug use and is commonly, though erroneiously, referrred to as minimal, it has grown on me since the summer. Producers such as Richie Hawtin, Steve Lawler, Dubfire and Carlo Lio lead the techno house scene which features: a meticulous focus on nuances, a constant bassline, tribal sounds and mild crescendos.

Here are a few tunes by Christian Smith that have been buzzing in my head lately. Please let us know how you feel about this genre, and we'll focus more on it if you so desire.

A mellow tune with obvious Brazilian influences reflected in the drum beat. While it may sound redundant to the untrained ear, there are many nuances that make this track distinct. Listen closely, especially when the trumpet slowly kicks in a couple minutes in.

This track sounds very industrial and almost harsh with the chain-saw noise and cymbals in the first part of the song. However, it calms down and slowly grows on you as you realize your head starting to bop to the bass.

D.A.N.C.E

There is reason to do so. Gaspard Auge (one half of the globally renowned Justice) has reportedly stated that the duo is currently working on a new studio album to be released later this year. As if the new Daft Punk album and tour hasn't had the French house fanatics feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve, 2010 now promises to be a landmark year for the genre.

Here's an oldie to chew on while you wait:

Feel Well

If you don't know who Axwell is by now...who am I kidding, you do.
An essential part of the Swedish House Mafia has taken a run at Prok & Fitch's "Walk With Me". If you're a DJ, you probably already know about this tune, and you should.

I'm not sure what else I can really say other than this guy has done his piano roll homework and nails it just about every time.

Disco For Lunch

The French Horn Rebellion have earned themselves some glowing reviews throughout the past year. They have effectively made the jump to indie phenomenon in the UK and can be heard regularly on the radio and inside the clubs. The Milwaukee based group consists of Robert Molinari performing the vocals, keyboard and of course french horn (his major in school), and brother David who also touches the vocals, keys and handles the programming.
With Influences like MGMT and Brazil's Database to guide them, the brothers have learned to never be afraid of who they are, and although when listening you may hear familiar influences, it is obvious that the final sound is their's alone. A perfect example is their new Database collaboration single "Beaches and Friends" which will be released on iTunes very soon. You'll want to buy this one folks.

The Twelves, another Brazilian duo, have touched their golden fingers on this track to make it even more dance floor/DJ friendly. These guys have a special ear for remixes and this tune is no exception. If you like Disco prepare to purchase a new set of undergarments.

New Swedish House Mafia Track?

There have been many postings about this track lately, given the affinity this blog has for the group's music, I felt obliged to post this. Personally, the instrumental nature of this track makes me think it's more for a Sebastian Ingrosso and/or Steve Angello production. However, Sebastian Ingrosso did mention on his Twitter that a new Swedish House Mafia song had been produced. I guess time will tell...

Impatient,

Tuesday Tea Time

I've been feeling the British vibe for a while now so here are two of my favourite new artists and tracks to accompany them.

First are the Infadels. This rock/electronica group hails from London and have been making noise on the radio and blogs for some time now. In their upcoming CD "The Future of Gravity Boy" they team up with the sensational Alex Metric to produce a sure fire indie craze that will keep the kids up all night. Keep an eye out for the release soon on Moda. Their first single off the album "Ghosts" is a powerful and dramatic tune that I have fallen in love with. The vocals and melody are well put together and Metric has managed to balance the two quite nicely.

My next UK dwelling producer, Tom Staar, is a relatively fresh face on the dance music scene. He's currently working on his new EP "Heavy Artillery" while playing at Moda in London with the likes of Crookers and Erol Alkan. I was lucky enough to hear one of his tunes on Radio 1 and immediately delved into his Myspace page. There are a few cool tunes there definitely worth checking out, but there is little doubt "Two Tone Simms" is his finest work. To be released soon on Moda, this song is a melodic rave tune whose bassline will get you moving in a straight jacket.

Have a listen on his myspace page here:

The Art of the Remix

It's amazing how a producer can take either a sub-par song, or a phenomenal one, and grind it with new vocals, wobble the bass-lines, and inject more drama to create something utterly unique and amazing. Two of the best known producers, Dirty South and Sebastian Ingrosso took a track that was plastered all over the blogosphere, and made it more dramatic, upbeat and ultimately club-friendly.

Miike Snow- Silvia (Dirty South and Sebastian Ingrosso Remix)

Also reigning from the same Swedish House Mafia camp, A2N1 the younger brother of Steve Angello, alongside Max Vangelli to totally revitalize a dreary sounding track through steel drums and classic keyboard additions.

Ellie Goulding- Starry Eyed (AN21 and Max Vangelli Remix)

Later days,

George Byron

A New Frontier

I figured providing some profound mission statement would be an appropriate way to mark the beginning of this aimless blog. However as we venture out to the depths of drum and bass, hip hop, indie rock, disco, house, electro, dub step, tech-house, tribal, minimal, progressive, fidget and anything else that is music to our ears, I realized there was not much more to say. This blog is as much a forum for us, as it is a source of information, inspiration and (hopefully not) indigestion for you.

Produced in 2002 off his first album "Deadringer", RJD2 combines with Blueprint to produce this lyrical masterpiece. More to follow.
